here's one for the jam people

The tried and true mason jar celebrates it's 147th birthday today. John Mason patented his now infamous screw neck bottle - a.k.a. the "mason jar" - on November 30, 1858.

Just you wait 'till the 150th anniversary. That's gonna be huge.

butter, eggs, bread... now posted online

In the style of Found (whose site has been nicely redesigned since I last visited), Grocery Lists collects - surprise, surprise - grocery lists. Lacking in the bizarre quality of many Found finds, the mostly banal and repetitive contents of Grocery Lists do have their own appeal for the truly avid fan of voyeristic ephermera.

damn the (meat)man

Post punk kitchen's manifesto may not be quite down to a science ("it's about happiness and fluffy white bunnies and running through the daisy fields barefoot, throwing tofu at passers-by..."), but they sure have a load of good-looking recipes (not to mention staffers). Check it:
pumpkin waffles
baked acorn squash with apples
gingerbread cupcakes
naan
and many more!

I still get that slightly skewed, suspicious (i.e. just a liiiittle out one eye) look from people along with the, "are you vegetarian/vegan?" question. Someday I will say yes, confirming their suspicions. For now, another helping of beef stew and a focus on healthy eating, in whatever form.

More plush seating

In the spirit of the toy chair, Brazillian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana have some incredible plush chairs. My favourite is the alligator chair (hilarious!) and the sushi chairs, which are ingeniously constructed out bundles of rolled fabric. I wonder if the designers know about the rival plush toy chair makers out there?

Check out all the amazing seating at Moss.

Mathcraft

You know how it's supposed to be impossible to fold a piece of paper more than 8 times? No more!

Britney Gallivan has solved the problem and set the record for folding a single piece of paper 12 times.

But how, you ask? The answer is simple (and also very complex): math.

Ahh, math. You saved us again.

A throne fit for a cheerleader

I bought a chair in a garage sale. The white paint was chipped and the pale green seat cover was really a grubby grey, with a mysterious stain on it that I avoided thinking about too closely.

"Ah ha!" I thought, "A five-dollar chair, just waiting to be redone! What a great project - and great deal, to boot!" (Ok, so I never actually think "to boot", but wouldn't it be great if I did? Yes. Yes, it would.)

Fast forward three years. This weekend, I FINALLY recovered the chair by cutting up one of my favourite old t-shirts and painted it bright green, just cause it's a sassy colour. I'm pretty pleased with the results, even though it turned out much more "collegiate"' than I had intended. Rah! Rah! Go tigers!

A chair made of plush toys! At once comfortable and creepy.

At Canary in a Coalmine, there are lots of great projects. It seems that all the links are broken, though, as the show happened in 2003... but you can get a hint of some beautiful and interesting designs anyway.

Hipster Animal Mascots

I adore these pillows. [link]

Why are owls so trendy these days, anyway? It seems like owls are the new hipster animal mascot... aka HAM.

Highly scientific polls reveal that the top 3 HAMs are:

    1. Wolf (emerging HAM)... or maybe Squid. (!Wolf VS Squid!)
    2. Owl (current HAM; popularity now possibly in decline)
    3. Deer (formerly the hottest HAM; now used sparingly in HAM culture)

What do you think? Any predictions of future HAMs? And why do hipsters need HAMs anyway? Do other pop-culture social groups have animal mascots? Indepth exploration of these issues to follow in PhD thesis.

Socks & supper

Last night, for Hallowe'en, I dressed up as a sock monkey for the second year in row. So I was delighted to see the book that's curently on Loobylu: Stupid Sock Creatures. I love that there are such random books coming out based on people's brilliantly random projects, like getting people to send you their old socks so you can make (stupid) creatures out of them.

Speaking of the brilliant random projects, my copy of the the blog-to-book cooking/challenge memoir Julie & Julia finally arrived in the mail. Only 5 weeks to ship! Actually, 4 1/2 to ship and get lost at the post office, then another 1/2 week to re-ship it. Better late than never, I guess.
