jeux d'oranges

I've always wanted to be able to peel an orange in one long piece. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't - but what a beautiful, spirally thing I have when I manage it. But some go further than a spiral. Some people make things out of their orange peels. Jeux d'oranges has a load of them... one of my faves is above. (Sorry, this page is only in French!)

oh, happy day, with joyous glee!

Happy, happy, happy.

It's official. Today is the Happiest Day of the Year. And we have the equation to prove it.

Welsh psychologist Dr. Cliff Arnall has determinded that Friday, June 23rd is the happiest day of the year.

The seasonal disorders specialist has devised a formula that measures good mood through outdoor activity, high energy levels and more sunlight.

The equation Arnall devised to find the happiest day is O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He.

O stands for being outdoors and outdoor activity, N for nature, S for social interaction, Cpm for childhood summers and positive memories, T for temperature and He for holidays and looking forward to time off.

Today was also pinpointed as the happiest day of the year because of its added "thank goodness it's Friday" feeling.

Get the whole story here.

Or, for another dose of sunshine and lollipops with a cherry on top, visit CakePower.com, home of Lovin Sullivan Cakes, a bakery in NYC. Such beautiful cakes! Amazing, amazing, amazing - chances are, delicious, too.

Are you smiling yet? :)

will knit for haircut

First off: sorry. There's been very litte action on mapgpie and cake over the past week. But we have a good excuse for it, really: Linds is now in PEI (from Ontario) and I was in Toronto (from Vancouver) - though we did briefly cross paths in the Tdot, which was, of course, superfantastic.

Ok, now time for a story. Not quite America's Next Top Model, but probably as close as I'm gonna get. I was sitting in a cafe with my craft group, happily knitting away and chatting, when this guy comes over and asks if I'd like to get my hair cut for free. He was working at the salon nextdoor, and his scheduled hair model hadn't shown up, so he was scouring the streets for a girl with short hair. I was up for a free haircut, and have always been curious about this whole "hair model" thing, so I went for it. About two hours later (!) I had heard (but not really understood) a great deal of hair-cutting jargon and ended up with a super-short, sassy do.

See what knitting can get you? It's all glamour, glamour, glamour.

yo gabba gabba!

While we're on the topic of kids, you must check out this new tv show for kids called YO GABBA GABBA! No news yet on when or where it will air, but the site is already making it's rounds online.

The characters are awesome: a 70's styled DJ in orange jump suit and a pile of random creatures (a cyclops, a robot, a "cat-dragon", etc) that look like life-sized Japanese vinyl toys.

Other bonuses about the show: Julius The Monkey (aka the Paul Frank monkey) makes guest appearances, and Chad Van Gaalen (aka one of my musical crushes) is one of the featured animators.

Watch the YO GABBA GABBA! trailer and sing along to the songs here. "Party in my Tummy" is one of the best kids songs since the glory days of Sesame Street sing-alongs.

canadian content quilts

Calling all Canadian politicians and activists - and quilters.

Capital Matters was the theme of one of the exhibits at the 25th anniversary conference of the Canadian Quilters Association, which took place in Ottawa this May.

Based on this theme, crafters created wallhangings in a range of techniques - from quilting to hooking to embroidery, and other fibre and textile arts. The pieces cover many Canadian issues, such as the spending of public money, sponsorship scandals, the mad cow scare, and other Canadian politics and icons.

Visit this flickr set for photos and with explanations of all the Capital Matters pieces. Oh, Canada!

sensing a pattern

Need a new desktop pattern? Yes? No? Maybe?

Now can you ask your desktop that question - since it can double as an eight ball with this wallpaper by Ray Fenwick.

This is just the latest in a series of patterns by this Halifax-based artist: view and download them all here. The pink battle scene is particularly nice.

(While you're there, also check out his other artwork - some great pics in there, like this one. You can see more of his work here.)

If you're looking for fantastic (and free) background patterns for websites, definitely shake hands with squidfingers.

For more pattern madness, visit print + pattern for daily updates on just that. Inpiring - and a little overwhelming.
