the aww factor

It was a long, mildly crazymaking day at work for me - and, it seems, also for a lot of people I talked to.

But do not despair. Here's an image I came across today that cheered me up immensely.

Apparently, it's from an ad campaign from Banana Republic. But don't let that deter you from being endeared.

It reminds me of the May 2006 issue of Luerzer's Archive magazine, which featured a koala in a snowsuit. I almost bought this issue just because of that little guy on the cover.

Yes, animals with human clothes on. Somehow it has that knee-jerk aww-inducing effect. And I mean that in a good way.

ceci n'est pas du bois

Fake wood... Is it cheesy? Clever? Ugly? Retro? Kitsch? Ironic? Original? Overused? Utterly brilliant? Who knows, who cares. I, for one, love it - for a mixture of reasons. I just bought some new sunglasses with plastic frames that look like wood grain - and they're fab.

Whether you can't get enough of it or can't stand it, in this day and age you know that someone's going to blog about it. It's (K)not Wood is a blog entirely devoted to fake wood - or "faux bois" to true conoisseurs. Let me repeat that, with empahsis: Devoted! Entirely! To! Fake! Wood! This is why I love the internets.

A few of my faves featured on the blog are the wood grain pillow by Hunter Gatherer, the xbox360 wooden faceplate, this wooden sketchbook, this "Logs in Pants" print by Saelee Oh, and the birch paintings by Lisa Congdon.

And yes, they even cover wood-panelled cars.

snap!

As you may have noticed, I added the snap gadget to the site, so when you roll over a link, you can see a preview of the page it links to.

So... what do you think? Is this annoying? Helpful? Useless? Awesome? Let us know what you think.

UPDATE: Thanks for the feedback. Consensus is that snap is no good, so I've snapped out of it. (Please note that puns are non-removable from this blog.)

san francisco, city of hugs

Actually, make that "city of hug". Singular. One really, really BIG hug.

Visual artist Michelle Blade is organizing a huge hug-in. If you're in San Francisco this Saturday, January 27th at noon, get in on the love, when dozens, hundreds or maybe even thousands of people will gather together with arms outstretched.

People will be grouped by the colours they're wearing, so the visual effect will be even greater. All the love will be filmed for a video project, and a potluck will follow. Sounds lovely.

Balloon Toss by Michelle Blade

Get all the details here. Also be sure to check out Michelle Blade's captivating artwork. Many of the pieces featured on her website deal with similar themes as the hug-in: groups of people participating in trust falls (where you close your eyes and trust someone else to catch you), gathered in crowds, or climbing mountains together.

knitting help... with videos!

After looking through all of my knitting books for help with a k1f&b, I turned to the internet and found KnittingHelp.com's abbreviations explained section. It has videos (often in two formats, Continental and English)! I had a pleasant "Oh! THAT's what they mean by k1f&b!" moment and got on with my project. What a great resource.

lovely prints for less

Thanks to a reader for reminding me of Thumbtack Press... Siobhan had posted about it a few months ago, but I forgot! Ah, how I am wont to repeat myself. And others. Anyway, good recommendation.

For instance, this is a nice one.

handy hemming trick

This little trick is genius! Put a string up in a doorway at your desired hemline, dust it with chalk or talcum powder, then step on up wearing the article of clothing to be hemmed. Now if there was only a trick to make hemming pants easier. Man, I hate hemming pants.

Also sewing-related, I'm working up my courage to try something from this lovely book.

attempts at good home:personality ratio

I've been living as a student for so long, moving every few years and staying in an everything-is-temporary mindset. "This is good enough for now," I'm always thinking. "This will do." Yesterday, when I was asked what the best-designed thing in my house was, I struggled to think of anything that was really all that well designed. How is it that I'm so interested in design, and yet do not make any effort to surround myself with well crafted, well designed things? It's not a matter of having more, of owning more, or of buying more - it's about putting a lot of thought into the pieces (furniture, art, accessories, accents...) that make up your personal space. I resolve to begin fixing this now.

As a first step, I've been looking into lovely (and reasonably priced) prints. Art was never something that I allowed myself to spend money on, thinking that I would either never find something I liked enough or that I could/should just do it myself. Excuses, excuses.

Here are some sources:

Little Paper Planes
In particular, I like the treeboat, horsehead hostess, and mountain battles prints. Also, none of the prints currently available by Jillian Tamaki or Katy Horan are quite right for me, but I'm going to keep my eye on those two.

Tiny Showcase
Not much available right now - I'll have to keep checking.

Via the guest blog, it's Design*Sponge's affordable art guide!

Some of the artists I like:
Camilla Engman | Jillian Tamaki | Katy Horan | Amy Ruppel | boygirlparty | kozy 'n dan

Who am I missing? Where else should I look for good prints?

the ideal radios

I'm in love. Isn't it beautiful? And not only is it nice to look at, apparently the sound is just marvelous. It has tuners that "brings clarity to even the weakest stations" and has "superb sound reproduction" with "improved bass output". If the radio doesn't have everything you want, then hey, it's compatible with iPods and other players. And if you're like me, thinking that it would be perfect if it just played CDs, too, then... well, you need to buy another one. I guess no one's perfect.

(If you can live without a CD player, maybe you can live without a clock, too - because those ones are very pretty... actually, they might be better looking. I would just really need it to have an alarm.)

hot chocolate that is good for you

I happened upon this recipe for "authentic" hot chocolate over at Sugar Savvy, and to my joy, found out that there is a way to make hot chocolate (and really, all chocolate) good for you. Apparently, it has to do with cocoa's antioxidants:

"When cocoa is combined with milk, the antioxidants in the cocoa bind to the proteins in the milk, making the antioxidants bio-unavailable, and therefore essentially useless."

Huh.

I wasn't able to find anything to back that up (the only article that mentioned it is in Nature, which I can't access), but here is some science related to cocoa and its antioxidant content:

Science says cocoa beats tea and red wine, but does not say anything about the milk + cocoa problem (nor does it compare to cranberry juice). Note that vegetables ultimately win over all.

More science: forget the word "antioxidant," it's really about a specific type of them, called flavonoids.

Either way, looks like a delicious hot chocolate recipe.

Süße Sac Tutorial!

I've been looking for a tutorial for one of these bags for ages! These bags are really simple, but really lovely - I've seen them made bigger than this, with linen in lovely semi-deep shades, and sold for $50 a pop! But now you can make your own!

I'm personally more into a plainer version, but if you like to embellish your projects there are lots of suggestions included in this tutorial! As a bonus, it shows you how to make yo-yos, which seem to have been popping up on all sorts of craft blogs lately.

new year, new soundtrack

I think I just came across my first crush of 2007. Daytrotter.

Daytrotter a music site with reviews, features, and mp3s of tracks that bands have recorded specially for Daytrotter when they happened to be passing through thier studio in Illinois.

So far they've interviewed and recorded bands like Page France, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, and Of Montreal, who are releasing their new album on January 23rd with the fabulous title Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?

One of the best things about the site, is the look of it - it's like opening someone's sketchbook. Fantastic. I also have a major crush on hand-drawn internets.
