Craft Rock Friday with Krista Muir

Today's Craft Rock Friday comes to us via the Hoopla book blog.

Krista Muir's embroidery work is in Hoopla, and she's also a talented musician. This video is lovely and magical. It makes me want to decorate small enchanted houses....

Little Drifters!

Booooooom.com is partnering with the Vancouver Sun to inspire a lil' bit of cuteness and summertime goodness.

Be a part of the Little Drifters project by creating a tiny boat using natural materials like twigs, leaves, grass, feathers or whatever you like.

Then head down to Trout Lake Park on Saturday July 24th at 1pm to launch your creations!

Send your photos of your boat launch in to Booooooom.

You don't need to be in Vancouver to participate: they'd love to get photos of mini-boats from elsewhere, too!

Read more about Little Drifters on Booooooom.com.

Donna Wilson

I have just two words for these pillows by Donna Wilson: FUN and FABULOUS.

Donna Wilson makes a ton of cute things including blankets, ceramics, and softies (Charlie the tall monkey and Cyril the squirrel fox are great!) and more.

She also recently created a maze using thousands of strands of yarn! Now that's a place I'd happily get lost in.

Craft Rock Friday with Josh Ritter

What's more romantic than the love between an archeologist and her mummy?

Awww.

The video for Josh Ritter's song, "The Curse", was created by the band's drummer, Liam Hurley, who also happens to be a puppeteer. Multi-talented!

You can read more about the making-of from Josh on NPR's All Songs Considered blog.

Craft Rock Friday with U900 Japanese Ukulele Duo

It's no secret that I have a soft spot for the ukulele. It's small, it's cute, it's Hawaiian. What's not to love?

It'd be harder to make the uke any cuter. OK, maybe if the ukuleles were miniature and being played by tiny amigurumi animals... THEN the humble uke could be unequivocally declared to be the Cute Overload of musical instruments.

Oh. Wait.

YES.

I present to you, on this fine Craft Rock Friday, the wonder that is U900 Japanese Ukulele Duo.

Here's their video for "Walk Don't Run". The bear's expression is priceless.

Their video for "Diamond Head" was awarded an honorable prize "Ukulele Video of the Year 2010" hosted by UkeHunt.

You can read an interview with U900's human representative on UkeHunt.

U900's new record, Ukulele Beatles, is available for pre-order on Amazon Japan.

Victor Dubrovsky's plush animals

These needle felted animals are all so beautiful and delicate-looking! They're really more like sweet, inviting sculptures with personalities than they are toys.

Keeping it sweet and simple this week.

Lonely Drifter Karen's "The Owl Moans Low" is a cute song - with a handmade owl to match.

craft rock friday with rex the dog

Model-making comes to life in Rex The Dog's "Bubblicious" video.

The lead singer dude is a little crazy (especially when he gets that toupe!), but the puppy playing the keyboard is cuuu-uuute. I mean, seriously, it's a puppy playing the keyboard.

Apparently the band's LP cover includes a little Rex pattern that you can cut out to make your own puppy (complete with doggie vomit...)

LEGO egg timer

Bwah! Love it. Hilarious. This LEGO timer is decorated with three minifigure faces – just set the timer to swap eyes and mouths! (Goes up to an hour, like any good timer should... even if they're calling it an "egg" timer.)

craft rock friday with herman dune

Even puppets can be rockstars.

Which seems wonderful (hooray for equal opportunity and puppet equality!) until you realize that they also have to put up with the downsides of being a rockstar... like being chased down the street by a legion of screaming of fans.

Witness the madness in Herman Dune's video for "1-2-3 Apple Tree".

I love how the mustachioed puppet moves when he plays the tambourine. Classic!

The awesomeness that is Herman Dune plays here in Vancouver tomorrow night. Yeah!

craft rock friday with rod thomas

Rod Thomas may be "bored bored bored with the same old lines as last year."

But dude, how can you be bored when you're playing a ukulele and singing amidst dozens of sock puppets? I mean, really. Some people are never happy.

welcome to the white house. we built it out of lego.

Lego beat Obama to the punch!

Before the big event even takes place, the fine people at Legoland California have created a Lego version of Barack Obama's inauguration.

The Guardian has kindly posted a slideshow of photos for those of us not fortunate to attend either inauguration - the human nor the Lego one.

craft rock friday with bjork

Bjork is eats porridge, sings real loud and is chased (and eventually eaten) by a giant teddy bear.

Personally, I like the little toy hedgehog.

This video of Bjork's "Human Behavior" was created by Michel Gondry, the crafty mastermind behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep.

bear lagerfeld

What a style icon, that Karl Lagerfeld. So's his teddy bear.

I love the matching expressions.

The Karl Lagerfeld (twin) bear retails for $1,500. Which is likely cheaper than this year's couture fashion pieces.

What does Karl have to say about all this?

"Bears are very nice, as long as you are nice to them."

Carry on, Karl. Carry on.

plush you! 2008!

Plush You! starts tomorrow! Since 2005, Seattle's Schmancy store has been hosting an annual exhibition of plush, softies, stuffed toys, or whatever you like to call them.

You can spy a few of the super softies in Schmancy's flickr set. Above is a cotton monster by Cotton Monster.

But I'm pretty sure there are going to be more items in the show, as I've already spied a few awesome photos in my contacts' flickr streams, including this fabulous entry by Hine (note the three cameras and three legs!):

Also this beautiful rhino beetle by Beetlegirl Design:

For more info on Plush You!, check out the website, blog and Schmancy's flickr.

And if you're in Seattle, be sure to prep by reading Schmancy's list of crafty shopping destinations in Seattle (which also includes tips on where to get cupcakes).

mmm, wrist worms

I like to call these "arm socks", but "wrist worms" is even better.

These fine worm specimens were created by Sandra Juto from Sweden. She had some up for grabs a couple of days ago, but they've already been snatched up!

Sandra's blog, Smosch is overflowing with gorgeous, playful, peaceful photos (see Exhibit A). She's also the mastermind behind these little moustached guys. Hee! What's not to love?

You can see more of Sandra's work over on her site.

the sock monkey building

Ever wonder where sock monkeys work?

I mean, you see them lying around and looking cute, but they've got to earn a living, too. One career path that many sock monkeys choose in Vancouver is to work at Fletchers Fabricare dry cleaners.

The reason is pretty obvious.

This is one of my favourite buildings in Vancouver. It makes me happy just to see it.

how to cook a crafty meal in under 2 minutes

Western Spaghetti is a new (and utterly adorable) stop-motion film made by the fine folks at PES. Rubix cubes, tin foil, rubber bands, post-it notes and candy corns all go into making this delicious meal/movie.

Also check out their other films, most of which also employ household objects and toys. My faves are Game Over (where cupcakes are used in old-school arcade games like Space Invaders, Frogger and Pac-Man), Moth (where a tape dispenser is a frog that eats bulldog-clip moths), and KaBoom! (where war is a mixture of toys, popcorn and circuit boards).

Also be sure to watch the "Making of KaBoom!" video.

"I used yellow gift bows, first and foremost, because they look exactly like real explosions."

celebrate the season with donkeys and sock monkeys

Your favourite donkey and sock monkey team are back!

You may remember Cecil and Britches from last year's video, No Santa Today...

Now they've made another video that's worth a watch - again in that glorious black-and-white old timey style. It's called Crumby Presents.

Cecil and Britches also now have a blog. What web-savvy little toys they are.
