More at MOV

Not only is The Museum of Vancouver (aka MOV) screening Handmade Nation this Friday, they're also hosting another DIY Night!

MOV AT NIGHT: DIY @ MOV 2
April 09, 2010 / 7:00 PM

Back by popular demand! A social-crafting night featuring workshops and a craft market by Birkeland Bros. Wool, Collage Collage, and Got Craft?.

An event for craft newbies and seasoned creators.
Music – Bar – Free Materials – Workshops
$15, Members free

The first DIY Night was lots of fun. I could hardly believe the line-up to get into the event! The museum was filled to the brim with creative, crafty people. My advice: get there early! Most of the supplies were already taken before I got there (except for the insanely huge pile of yarn!). But there was still lots of paper and pens left, so I grabbed a pink marker and spread out the floor to draw.... I left my drawing there (on purpose), and guess what? The MOV used it on their website to advertise the new DIY Night! Nice!!

Kirsti Wakelin (who also designed the Art Of Craft exhibit) posted a great set of photos from the first DIY @ MOV event up on Flickr. And if you haven't yet seen the Art of Craft exhibit, this is the perfect chance to catch it before it closes on April 11th.

DIY @ MOV

I'm really looking forward to this event on Thursday: DIY @ MOV: A Night of Social Crafting at the Vancouver Museum.

DIY @ MOV: A Night of Social Crafting
January 21, 2010 / 7:00 PM

Come celebrate the creativity and community of the growing DIY craft, art and design movement in Vancouver.

Generously sponsored by OPUS and Blim, there’ll be materials and workshops in a range of art and craft media from paper to yarn. Workshops (listed below) will begin at 8pm. There will also a mini Got Craft market, along with music, snacks and local brews.

Activities are geared so that everyone can participate - from the craft newbie to seasoned creators.

Blim: button-making and screen printing workshops
Knitgirl: Knitting and Craftivism
Kirsti Wakelin: drawing/ exquisite corpse.

If you’re super-proud of what you make at DIY@MOV, MOV is providing exhibit space so that your creation can be on public display in a museum. Think of the bragging rights!

$15 - Tickets available online or at the door.
MOV Members Free

The event is part of the MOV's new exhibit, Art of Craft, which runs until April 14, 2010. The show sounds great - it features craftwork from both Canada and the Republic of Korea:

Art of Craft showcases 173 spectacular fine craft works in three parts:

Unity & Diversity: Selected Works - 75 pieces from across Canada recently on display at the 2009 Cheongju International Craft Biennale in the Republic of Korea.

By Hand/BC and Yukon - 51 pieces from Canada’s West Coast with a focus on the artists’ creative processes and studio environments.

Craft from the Republic of Korea - 47 pieces demonstrating the excellence of traditional and contemporary crafts.

Handmade Nation Vancouver Premiere... and GIVEAWAY!

This is not something that Canadians are "supposed" to say, but I've been jealous of the States.

Ever since the Handmade Nation documentary started making the rounds of the USA, I've been hoping that it would travel north, cross the 69th parallel, and be screened in Canada. Specifically, in Vancouver.

Well, I am jealous no more! Handmade Nation premieres in Vancouver this July!

Handmade Nation Vancouver Premiere
Thursday, July 9th, 2009
Rio Theatre, 1660 East Broadway @ Commercial Drive
Craft Showcase at 7:00pm
Screening at 8:00pm

Go here for details and to buy tickets.

But wait, there's more. This not just a screening -- the movie will be preceed by a craft market full of local talent, plus filmmaker Faythe Levine herself will be there for a Q&A after the movie, along with a book signing for the companion book, Handmade Nation: The Rise of D.I.Y., Art, Craft, and Design, co-authored by Cortney Heimerl.

In case you couldn't tell, I super-excited about this event.

I'm also super-excited to announce that I have a pair of tickets to give away!

To enter, just leave a comment below by June 30th. I'll draw a winner at random on July 1st.

Big thanks to Andrea and Rob, for organizing all of this. They're the fab duo from Lotus Events, who also organize the Got Craft? and Got Craft? Bite Sized shows.

To find out more about Handmade Nation, check out their website. Poppytalk also ran a great interview with Faythe a while ago.

And last but not least, here's the trailer!

craft rock friday with devendra banhart

Oh Devendra Banhart, I have such a crush on you. You and your wavery growly voice singing beautiful nonsense.

Today's Craft Rock comes from Devendra, in a video for the song "Don't Look Back in Anger". It has to do with paper people, paper houses, paper flowers... plus a little (life!) lesson about adding colour to your world.

This is actually a cover of an Oasis song. I wouldn't have guessed that.

If you need to refresh your memory, here's the original. Maybe I'm biased, but I like Devendra Banhart's version better.

(On a tangent: Ryan Adams also does a pretty nice cover of Oasis' "Wonderwall" - and here's the original, in case you haven't just spent the last 14 years trying to get that out of your head.)

online calendar of craft fairs in vancouver and bc

If you're a crafter - or craft lover - in Vancouver or elsewhere in BC, you're gonna be happy. And oh so organized.

BC Craft Fairs is an online calendar of craft fairs in British Columbia - and, in my opinion, your best bet for knowing what's going on in craft fairs in this fine province. Whether your trying to find out deadlines for juried shows, or just want to go shopping for handmade gifts this weekend, this is your resource.

Many times I've looked for this exact resource, so I'm glad that someone has finally compiled all this info in one place. Amazingly, it's all done by ONE self-described compulsive crafter. Thank you, Tamsin!

Go to the BC Craft Fairs calendar and plan your next craft date.

Friday, December 7th, 6pm to midnight and Saturday, December 8th, noon to 6pm.

and

shiny fuzzy muddy 8
Featuring shiny fuzzy muddy members: AstroSatchel, Frances Felt, Laura McKibbon (I love her ceramics!), Kari Woo and Arleigh Wood, plus guest artists Jill Allan, Ulla Clark, Holly Cruise, Caroline Miller, Audra Neil, Patina Designs and Jasna Sokolovic.

Saturday, December 8th, 11 to 5 pm

There was also a great craft fair that we* discovered this past weekend called Toque, which was on at the Western Front. Lots of great vendors. I bought a t-shirt from Hand and Shadow, with a drawing of hair on it. Ok, that sounds kinda gross, but the drawing is really lovely.

(*Did I mention Lindsay (the other half of Magpie and Cake!) was in town? Yeeks! More on that to come soon, including pottery, gingerbread and snow...)
