set the table

It's been a long week and I'm ready for a nice, relaxing weekend brunch. Get inspired to set the table (for me, I hope!) with these flickr photos by Amsterdam's Mogo.

She's created quite a few delightful, playful takes on dishes and tableware - my favourites being the table and chair on the side of a cup, the dishes trapped in wallpaper, the pair of little lambs jumping through a bowl and the bubble wrap cup.

Oh, and I like my bacon very crispy.

plastic never dies

Australian artist Liana Kabel is using up leftovers. And I don't mean putting them in tupperware. I mean using up the leftover tupperware itself.

Liana has crafted a line of beautiful, playful jewelry using old plastics - including tupperware and knitting needles. Pictured here are a necklace made of beads formed from melted down tupperware and (more obvious) some bracelets made by bending vintage knitting needles. Love it!

You can keep track of Liana's latest creations through her site her blog and her flickr photos.

non-pricey prints

For the next two weeks, Maria of port2port press will be writing a guest blog on designsponge. Very cool - she's highlighting places to buy afforable art - places such as Thumbtack Press, where there are all kind of really lovely prints for under $50. Nice.

Follow the guest blog here (Maria's entries start on September 18th).

table legs, literally

iBride (pronounced like "hybrid" in French) is really taking table legs seriously. They make tables with animal legs - ostrich counters, sheep tables, dog stools, and more. Funny.

party like alpaca

Halifax, Nova Scotia. What does it make you think of? The ocean? Lobsters? Alpacas?

Wait. Alpacas?!

Lucy alerted me about the brilliantly named Pacafiesta that took place in Halifax this past weekend. Tons of events celebrated the mighty alpaca. Seems like the chubby-faced cousin to the llama is finally getting its due.

On the Pacafiesta site, they describe the festivities:

[...] superb alpacas for sale, a natural-fibre marketplace, spinners and weavers demonstrating their crafts, a fashion show, competitions, and gourmet food and wine in a very upbeat, fiesta atmosphere.

The site is woefully lacking in photos, but here are some photos tagged with Pacafiesta on Flickr - lots of alpaca yarn and alpacas in action. A few photos not to be missed: alpacas with hipster rockstar hair, an angry-looking puffy bunny, and this brilliantly tacky Pacafiesta billboard. Those crazy alpacas just don't know when to stop!

let's get ceramic

Today's entry is co-sponsored by the craft of ceramics and the concepts "big" and "small".

First off, the hilarious ceramic hair by Robert Stadler. It looks like it should go on Lego people. There's also a giant version for giant Lego people.

Also, the big bowl made out of little bowls by o-d-a, Thailand's Object Design Alliance. It's hugely cute.

magpie and cake eats up the art world

It's true. Magpie and Cake is now immortalized in art.

Look at the fantastic painting that my fantastic brother painted for me for my birthday! Thanks, T and N!

It's based on a painting called "Magpie Eating Cake" by Rubens Peale (1865). Those 19th century American painters sure are a funny bunch.

on my way (to the craft fair)

So things are going pretty well on my journey towards having my first craft fair table. I may have a little spent too much time planning, as I now have to kick it into high gear if I'm going to have enough quantity to fill a table.

My progress so far:

  • Lots of ideas + sketches
  • Two paper models to test patterns (plush pigeon + plush dog)
  • Three partially completed fabric prototypes (plush pigeon + plush snail + embroidered teacozy)
  • Two completed fabric prototype (plush sewing machine + tie cat)

Here's the cat I made from an old tie. I'm very happy with him, and will definitely be heading back to the thrift store to scoop up some some ties this weekend.

Meow.

I absolutely adore this monster cake. Unfortunately, I don't know the artist's name, but was It's by Scott Hove as part of the Community Virology show at the LoBot Gallery in Oakland, California in July. The concept for the show is pretty awesome:

This show is the result of releasing a constructed virus into Oakland.

The action of this virus is simple ... It infects only Oakland artists and causes them to infect other Oakland artists.

The virus is initially within 6 people, each of these people will infect 6 more people, this process will happen 4 times resulting in 1554 artists being infected.

Check out more photos from the show here.

teapot survey - please reply

I need your help.

I want to sew some teacozies to sell at my craft table, but every teapot I come across is a different size. Is there a "standard" teapot size?

The teacozies I want to make are much like this one - in design/rough idea only, not in style. That tutorial suggests you measure your teapot at it's thickest point around and over the top.

So, my question to you: what's the circumference of your teapot? And what's the "over" height? (See photos for Steps 1 and 2 here.) Please post your measurements in the comments below. Perhaps together we can find the ideal (or at least standard) teapot/teacozy size! Thanks!

sock monkeys go to the prom

Sock monkeys are going glam this season with elegant ballgowns fit for a night at the prom.

These two sock monkey dresses were specially created for the fashion event of the season - the Minnesota State Fair.
