Happy Craft Rock Friday, everyone. We're fully into Fall now, when it's dark and cold in the mornings and it's pretty hard to get out of bed and get yourself to work. So today, we're going to warm up with a little Craft Rock featuring plasticine narwhal and unicorn who fall in love...

Craft Rock Friday with Sophie Madeleine

Hello, July!

It's finally full-on SUMMER (please don't let me down now, Vancouver weather!) and it's an extra-long long-weekend for many (Happy Canada Day and Fourth of July!)... so today, Craft Rock Friday comes with an extra helping of sunshine.

And I know just the girl for that.

Sophie Madeleine is completely and utterly charming. Her voice is lovely, her lyrics are brilliant... and did I mention that she plays the ukulele?!

Sophie has the perfect song for Craft Rock Friday: "The Knitting Song"

Lovely, right?

Have a listen to this one -- "Take Your Love With Me" (aka "The Ukulele Song")

Sophie also plays with a partner as Rocky and Balls. Here's their song, "Love Cake"

OK, a couple more! Just to carry you through the long weekend. :)

Craft Rock Friday with U900 Japanese Ukulele Duo

It's no secret that I have a soft spot for the ukulele. It's small, it's cute, it's Hawaiian. What's not to love?

It'd be harder to make the uke any cuter. OK, maybe if the ukuleles were miniature and being played by tiny amigurumi animals... THEN the humble uke could be unequivocally declared to be the Cute Overload of musical instruments.

Oh. Wait.

YES.

I present to you, on this fine Craft Rock Friday, the wonder that is U900 Japanese Ukulele Duo.

Here's their video for "Walk Don't Run". The bear's expression is priceless.

Their video for "Diamond Head" was awarded an honorable prize "Ukulele Video of the Year 2010" hosted by UkeHunt.

You can read an interview with U900's human representative on UkeHunt.

U900's new record, Ukulele Beatles, is available for pre-order on Amazon Japan.

craft rock friday with born ruffians

Hello my foodie friends! This one goes out to you, as today's Craft Rock Friday explores the art and craft of cooking...

In their video for "I Need A Life", the Born Ruffians get a bit of a kitchen party started as they prepare dinner - even drawing in a few banyard and woodland friends...

The results are not suitable for vegetarians - or meat-eaters, for that matter! You have been warned.

On a side-note, just cause Born Ruffians are oh-so-rad, also be sure to watch this sweet video of them playing a little backseat ukulele. That one ends nicely, I promise! :)

craft rock friday with rod thomas

Rod Thomas may be "bored bored bored with the same old lines as last year."

But dude, how can you be bored when you're playing a ukulele and singing amidst dozens of sock puppets? I mean, really. Some people are never happy.
