See It, Sew It

The weather is starting to warm up, so of course I'm starting to think about summer dresses...

I love the "Make This Look" series over on The Sew Weekly. They take a dress that they've seen, then hunt out a sewing pattern that is pretty close so you can try make it yourself. They sometimes also link to fabric that's similar, or some cute accessories to complete the look.

Here are a few of my faves... now I just have to find some cute fabric and get to work!

Legwarmers Warm My Heart

image via Anushka Tay / Ravelry
Recently I've had legwarmers on the brain. It doesn't take many cool, dark autumn mornings to get me thinking about knitting again, wishing I had some warm woolies to keep me warm. And this year I've been thinking a lot about legwarmers.

I bought new boots this year, and totally love them: Puffin boots from Merrell. I have a crush on my own boots, they're so damn cute. Plus, cozy and comfy. And they do remind me of puffins. Which is awesome.

I think they would go great with some cute cable knit legwarmers. I am leaning towards trying out the Tree Trunk Legwarmers by Anushka Tay, but may go with the non-cabled Legwarmers by Jane Richmond, both free patterns on Ravelry.

What's more, last week's Purl Soho eNewsletter featured a pattern for rad and hilarious legwarmers that look like tube socks. Not enough legs, I tell you.... nor enough time to knit!

Marimekko + Converse = Double Love

A great pairing in my opinion! Converse is teaming up with Marimekko to produce a line of shoes with designs from the Finnish fabric superstars.

The Marimekko patterns featured in the sneakers include Tarha from 1963 and Pikkusuomu from 1965 by Annika Rimala and Kirppu from 1980 by Maija and Kristina Isola. Annika Rimala’s modern and original Marimekko designs adorned the covers of international fashion magazines as early as in the 1960’s. In 1967, she was chosen as one of the most influential fashion designers in the world. Maija Isola, important reformer and forerunner in the design of printed fabrics, designed over 500 fascinating fabric prints for Marimekko through her career – one of them being Kirppu, co-designed with her daughter Kristina Isola. ~Marimekko.com

I only wish they included the iconic red floral fabric in the line...

Check out Marimekko.com for more fabric fun (and cute dresses!) Plus, you just gotta love a website that lets you search by colour. (Seriously: awesome. All sites should have this feature.)

My Feet... in Uppercase Magazine!

SO EXCITED!

Uppercase magazine just posted some sneak peek photos of Issue #6... which includes my photo! And my feet! And my shoes!

That's me (and my shoes) on the first page of the article.

Uppercase put out a call for submissions for "shoegazing" photos... and mine made it into print! I cannot wait to get my hands (and feet?) on a copy!

It should arrive just around the same time as the new yellow shoes that I ordered! Sweet!

More than the Sum of its Parts

Totally digging the "This & That" feature on Oh Joy!, where Joy pairs a fashion piece with a matching item of decor.

I really like how Joy takes note of the small details in life, and celebrates them.

I love discovering connections between things, and seeing how seemingly random elements are related - whether or not this is intentional. What's more, the act of placing objects side-by-side, like Joy does, really makes them act as a foils to one another, highlighting their best qualities. In the same way that the people closest to you - friends, family, loves - pull out the best in you.

Check out more pairings tagged with "This & That" on the Oh Joy! blog.

you can fix it

All of a sudden, all of my socks have holes in them. The plastic coating on my headphones is ripped, exposing the wires underneath. The towel rack in the bathroom wrenched itself out of the wall, leaving a gaping hole in the plaster.

Yes, things are falling apart.

Fortunately, Spring is a time of renewal - as well as repair.

Craftzine named March "Mending Month" and has been providing a ton of useful tips on how to out things right.

Some personal faves are:
How to Mend Broken Jewelry (I love the videos!)
How to Mend a Fabric Tear Near a Zipper
How to Crochet Patches
How to Mend a Quilt
How to Hand-Sew a Blind Hem

Here are roundups of all the links from Craftzine's Mending Month:
Week 1
Week 2
Week 3
Week 4

BurdaStyle also has a handy tutorial on how to repair your umbrella. Chances are anyone who lives on the west rainy coast will be needing that soon enough.

What do you have to mend? And what do you keep putting off repairing?

Which reminds me, I still have to mend the torn pockets in my Spring coat - it's been like that since last Spring...

owls make me want to be a better knitter

Every winter, I make a scarf or two. I only knit in straight lines; no increasing, decreasing, or any fancy stuff. I'm that kind of knitter.

But this pattern makes me want to be a better knitter: the owl sweater.

Oh my. That is quite possibly the cutest sweater ever. If those owls were mine, I would wear them ALL the time.

Needled has kindly written up and posted the pattern, so you (and I, once I learn to knit properly) can make your own owl sweater: the pattern PDF is here, and also read Needle's notes.

There's also a pattern for adorable knitted owl mittens, free from Kelbourne Woolens.

HOOT!

bear lagerfeld

What a style icon, that Karl Lagerfeld. So's his teddy bear.

I love the matching expressions.

The Karl Lagerfeld (twin) bear retails for $1,500. Which is likely cheaper than this year's couture fashion pieces.

What does Karl have to say about all this?

"Bears are very nice, as long as you are nice to them."

Carry on, Karl. Carry on.

weather cools off, thoughts turn to toast

paper dolls for adults

Be warned: if you answer yes to any of the following, you may soon have a new addiction.

- Did you played dress-up with your dolls as a kid?
- Do you love to play with colour combinations?
- Do you wish your closet (and wallet) were larger?
- Do you like to collage?

Polyvore is essentially virtual dress up for adults. The site lets you mix and match images of clothes, accessories, shoes and more from various stores and sites online - allowing you to create collages of your dream outfits and interiors. It's really easy to use: you can quickly resize images and even search for items by colour.

It's also interesting to see what other colours and items other people are grouping together. And, if you really love an item, you can purchase it from the linked shop.

Here's the collage I made. This is what I'd wear tomorrow if it just happened to be in my closet.

It's my birthday, so I think it's appropriate.

Now head on over to Polyvore and get yourself all gussied up, too.

mmm, wrist worms

I like to call these "arm socks", but "wrist worms" is even better.

These fine worm specimens were created by Sandra Juto from Sweden. She had some up for grabs a couple of days ago, but they've already been snatched up!

Sandra's blog, Smosch is overflowing with gorgeous, playful, peaceful photos (see Exhibit A). She's also the mastermind behind these little moustached guys. Hee! What's not to love?

You can see more of Sandra's work over on her site.

After a bit of searching, I found it:

Gorgeous! That one is definitely on my wish list. Maybe I'll gift it to myself next month. Also, over on port2port, the picture in this post has me dreaming about a soft tartan scarf and a grey wool coat.

these days of converse

I think my feet are trying to tell me something.

I've come across not one... not two... not three... but FOUR (!!!!) sightings of Converse shoes in the past couple of days. Four Converse sightings that've made me stop and say yay.

1. Nina Braun's knitted sneakers. I love how specific they all are: particular styles and brands. She even sewed a pair of baby Nike sneaks!

2. Vichi in Buenos Aires has been staying up late at night to set hightops on fire.

A few other pairs got torched, too.

3. Swedish artist Camilla Engman's design was chosen for the Converse (RED) program. So not only can your feet be super styley, they'll also be making a donation towards helping to reduce the effects of AIDS in Africa.

4. And yesterday morning on my way to work, I spied a bunch of shoes thrown over a telephone wire... painted pink with white polka dots!

So are these converse omens? Can a shoe store be in my future? Hmmm.

all dressed up and everywhere to go

It snowed yesterday, here in Vancouver. (Unsurprisingly, it only snowed for a few hours, and it's already all melted away. Boo!)

After I got back from my walk in the snow, I warmed up next to a roaring internet, and came across an oh-so-thematic project by Riitta Ikonen, who's studying at the Royal College of Art in London.

For her Snowflake project, Riitta dressed up in a snowflake costume and lay around in the landscape of Finland.

Why? My answer: cause it's awesome. Her answer (which is much more well though out):

For two years now we haven't had snow in Finland for Christmas. This is very unusual and worrying and prompted me to start an ongoing site specific project looking at the effects of global warming.

Riittta likes to dress up a lot. For various projects, she has dressed up as a bird and leaf, roadkill, a bright idea, and even Slovenia.

I adore her costumes - they are playful and really well designed - and most of all, it looks like she's having so much fun. My favourite her costume projects is Human Nylon:

Life jackets, bulletproof vests, seat-belts etc. are made of Nylon. As a final project in Brighton I explored the protective qualities and the safety in this amazing material. I became a Human Nylon to find out more about how and where Nylon is protecting us.

The results are just hilarious...

Keep up with all of Riitta's stealthy disguises on her website.

rainbow remix

I once heard about a friend of a friend (etc?) whose job it was to predict and talk about colour trends. As in, companies would consult with her about what colours to make their new line of clothing, cookware, luxury condos, whatever.

Sounds like one of the best jobs ever, right?

If you just said "Right!" or "Hell ya!" in your head (or out loud), then before you rush off to google "how to become a colour consultant" (ahem), check out these sites for the similarly colour-mad...

Wear Palettes uses photos from the ever-great style-spotting Sartorialist and extrapolates the colours used in the outfits. It's kinda like showing which brightly-coloured lego blocks were used to make up that totally rad castle you built.

Kris's Color Stripes is another blog with that also uses colour bars. The blog's not entirely about colour, but Kris keeps a colour diary that highlights the beautiful palettes found in photographs. Separating the colours like this really makes you notice the beautiful parts that make up the whole as well as how they interact with each other.

COLOURlovers is a community site that brings together, um, colour lovers, to talk about colours and palettes. It's a great resource to check out colour trends and just to get inspired.

All these sites are ripe with inspiration if you're planning on a little home makeover, or even just to help you get dressed with a lil' more sass in the morning.

Think of them as the next generation of those paint swatches you pick up at the hardware store.
