that's it I'm buying a ring

I'm - in - love. Again. Why are The Netherlands so far away? I think Scandinavia and I should just get married already.

Club Geluk ("Happy Club") makes everyday stuff, like pillowcases and potholders and whatnot, but with very lovely fabrics that one simply cannot get here in Canada. Pretty! [via] Link.

obama art online

And of course - how could I forget in yesterday's roundup? - one of the best Obama art projects (or web apps? maybe art app?) is Barack Obama Is Your New Bicycle.

Aww. What a nice guy.

obama art

I am not American. I am not into politics. But - for once - there is something inspiring about the current US political race, thanks to Barack Obama. This collective inspiration is manifesting itself in many forums - including the visual arts. There seem to be so many artists out there right now who want to show their support for Obama - and in turn inspire others.

Obama art. It's everywhere.

The best known Obama artworks to date are, of course, the posters recently created by uberfamous street artist Obey, aka Shepard Fairey. Creativity magazine interviewed Obey about his motivation behind the prints - which sold out in a mere 15 minutes.

Other graphic artists have also been inspired to show their support. Some are quite similar in style and palette, such as Gemini Studio's "Yes We Can" poster and The Mac's "HOPE" poster -- but damn, check out The Mac's fine brushwork!

Xtrapop created this retro-style Obama 08 poster (below centre), as well as this variation in warmer hues. The Date Farmers created a Mexican street art influenced poster that calls out for "!Cambio!" (below left). CRO, aka Ray Noland, has been postering up Chicago with smooth pro-Obama signage since last summer (below right).

Jill Dryer (who's usually here) made this cute poster of lines of birds who "Stand 4 Change", and another Obama bird poster, too.

Crafters have also been showing their colours. A quick search for the keyword "Obama" on Etsy brings up a surprising number of results -- today there are 132 Obama items for sale.

Alcove Press' "I want to Barack your world" cards were originally created for Valentine's Day, the cards were so popular that they brought back them back - so now you can spread the O-love all year round.

Holliday's "Obama is sexy" wallet features some nice silkscreening and colour choices.

There are lots of ways to show your Obama support through jewellery: a few options are SquishyMatter's "Obama Mama" and "Obamaphile" pendants, "Vote Obama" charm necklaces by matsudabunch and SilverStones, and beaded necklaces and bracelets by leeza888. On the more, let's say, bold end of the spectrum are cbtscloset's earrings of Obama's face.

Taking it to the next level, the able-fingered Etchasketchist twisted and turned to produce a portrait of Obama on an etch-a-sketch.

And last but not least: the weirdest Obamarama-inspired piece is certainly joanmwyand's "Go Obama 2008" political moustache pin. I love staches as much as the next gal - but am I missing the connection here?

come in and sit for a while...

The Interior Design Show - aka IDS for kids in the know - is happening in Toronto at the end of the month. Before it kicks off, they're hosting a window display contest - and I was happy to see Magic Pony amongst the contestants. Actually, not so much "amongst" as "far above", I'd say.

A surreal, fairy tale kind of overgrown plush living room... I'm not sure whether it's more inviting or eerie...

Magic Pony's display was created by Tania Sanhueza, who also sewed these sweet tweedy burrowing owls. (Here are some more!)

See more photos of the window display in Magic Pony's flickr set and if you're a fan of Tania's work, cast your vote over on the IDS site.

i <3 hearts

Happy Heart Day, everyone!

Today (and always - we're usually just quieter about it) we're sending out big love to all our family, friends, and all of our interweb friends (that's you).

The huge heart above was the love child of Brad Downey. His street art is great - just the kind of subtle, playful things that'll make you smile on a dreary city day. For example, check out these slight alterations to the urban landscape, these liberated street signs and these ones, entitled "Madonna and Child".

sandwiches ___ cakes

Fill in the blank.

Mr. Bizzle on flickr (aka Mr. Bingo elsewhere) is running a brilliant contest based on this photo that he took.

We all know that everyone loves cake and everybody likes sandwiches... but how do they two of them get along? What is the real relationship between sandwiches and cakes? Are they secretly in love? Do they even get along? Are they long-lost cousins? If you know the answer, enter the contest on the photo page before February 15th. You just might win drawing and a twix bar. Mmm.

(PS. Mr. Bingo is the one responsible for the these fantastic hair portraits - among other things.)

Birds of a feather flock together.

The Little Bird Project gathered together almost 200 drawings of birds from designers, illustrators and street artists from all around the world.

Organized by Daniel Arendt and Christian Lindemann - both of whom are awesome designers and illustrators in their own right - the artworks were recently displayed in shows in Germany. Lucky for us, there's also a gallery online, too. Proceeds from the Little Birds Project poster go to support UNICEF.

The Little Bird Project is strongly recommended if you're a fan single-animal/multi-artist projects like the sheep market or the essence of rabbit.

NOT recommended if Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds gives you the spooks.

save pancake tuesday!

Bah, forget Super Tuesday. It's time to focus on more important things. Today is Pancake Tuesday.

Accordin to a poll reported in The Guardian, this most worthy holiday is at risk of dying out.

With Shrove Tuesday tomorrow, only one in five Britons questioned in late January knew the day was looming and only 27% of households plan to make pancakes.

The poll shows more than two-thirds said they would either ignore the tradition or make only a half-hearted effort to mark the occasion.

I appreciate the indignation expressed in The Guardian's headline: "Flippin' heck"! Allowing our only breakfast-food-heralding holiday to simply fade away is such a shame.

Of course, it's not all doom and gloom. Another story on the Guardian's site chooses to regard a 27% pancake-participation rate as proof that the tradition lives on.

So whether you choose to see the syrup bottle as half-empty or half-full, I say it's time to get out your skillets and start flipping.

For inspiration, here's a little pancake-making stop animation / recipe.

(P.S. I took the photo above at Sears Fine Food in San Francisco. As their sign proudly states, Sears is "WORLD FAMOUS FOR LITTLE PANCAKES". Little pancakes! Not many places can boast that. Delish.)

who do you love?

Sigh.

The Ones We Love is a truly beautiful project.

Here's what it's all about:

The Ones We Love is a project highlighting young and talented photographers from around the world. Each artist contributed six photographs of the person(s) who is most important to them, taken outdoors in a natural setting. The goal of the website is to portray the people who are loved, cherished, and inspirational to these artists, and also showcase the differences and similarities in the photographs each of them took within the same guidelines.

Partners, parents, children, friends... all kinds of loved ones are beautifully portrayed. The photos are also paired with notes - another way to express how they feel.

Give me photos or a handwritten note over roses or chocolate any day.

Is it wrong if I use Magpie & Cake to say that, hey, it's my birthday in a couple of months, and I've found a beautiful old school phone that you can buy me? I mean, I'm just saying. If you wanted to. You could.

(This one and this one are nice, too.)

the colour of the earth

At first glance, The Global Tree seems similar to some other lovely colour swatch blogs I've recently come across. But this project is not only about colour, it's about our world...

As part of an interactive design project, each day for the next year a new leaf will be added to The Global Tree. Each new leaf will be a different shade of green. The colors will be sampled from selected photos that represent a unique part of the world. As this project unfolds, I hope to promote environmental sustainability.

Combining beautiful photos and colour palettes with information about the world and sustainability (did you know that Denmark's Island of Samso is the most energy independent place on earth?), The Global Tree is a great way to get inspired in more ways than one.

make your own patterns in a click

The other day, I mentioned a company that prints custom wallpaper. If your needs are more virtual - you have a website to decorate rather than a living room - then there's help for you, too.

London's Victoria & Albert Museum has a fun online game where you can customize your own textile patterns. The choices are all quite grandiose, but if damask and chintz are up your alley (hmm, that'd be a really colourful alley...) then you'll get a kick out of this. (via)

If your tastes are a little more modern, try Colourlovers' pattern maker. This tool is much more flexible, as you have tons of pattern-bases to choose from (contributed by the community on an ongoing basis), and can adjust up to five different colours. You can use the patterns you customize on your desktop, website, profile page, etc, or add it to the Colourlovers' community library. Read more about the tool here or to start playing with it, go here.

graphic design: the movie

Design Observer is trying to cast Graphic Design: The Movie.

Paul Rand, played by Drew Carey.

Hilarious.

See the rest of the cast here.

I'd like to see this done with other industries that were never destined for bio-pics... book publishing, web developers, geologists... It'd also be fun to even try cast for the movie of my own life, matching up my friends and family with celebs... Hmm...
